Gone in 48 hours: UCA restoration scheme for Harbour region oversubscribed
PA hails 'overwhelming response' for latest Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ scheme
The scheme to restore UCA properties in the harbour region is already oversubscribed 48 hours after it was launched following an overwhelming response.
In a statement on Friday, the Planning Authority said they received 727 expressions of interest in less than 48 hours for the Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ (Restore Your Home and the village) scheme which was launched on Wednesday.
A total of €9 million has been allocated for the restoration, conservation and maintenance of properties across the region which includes Valletta, Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua, Żabbar, Floriana, Kalkara, Tarxien and Paola.
The Harbour Region scheme carried the largest allocation ever made in this year’s edition, reflecting the scale and the historic significance of the region. Previous calls for the scheme were taken up within minutes of opening so this year applications are being opened in a staggered process by region.
The Planning Authority said the strong uptake “demonstrates the high level of public interest in heritage conservation and the readiness of homeowners, organisations and businesses to invest in the restoration and maintenance of properties located within Urban Conservation Areas.”
PA executive chairman Johann Buttigieg said the response “clearly shows how strongly communities value their built heritage”.
“This level of interest confirms that when the right support is in place, people are eager to invest in the restoration and long-term care of our historic towns and villages.”
The scheme is expected to be rolled out in two other regions “shortly”, the PA said on Friday.
