Firefighters were called to tackle a grass fire that broke out in a field next to Addolorata Cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Civil Protection Department said crews were alerted to the blaze at around 1pm.

Fire fighters from four stations were called on site to tackel the spreading grass fire which was eventually brought under control some three hours later, CPD said.

A thick plume of black smoke could be seen billowing above the cemetery as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.

CPD said after the fire was brought under control, cooling operations commenced to extinguish any remaining hotspots.

An aerial view of the site of the fire showed scorched earth leading up to the boundary wall of the cemetery.
