Home energy efficiency scheme launched for 16 localities in south and centre

BCA will cover up to 90 per cent of costs

The government is launching a scheme to make homes in the south region more energy efficient.

The Building and Construction Authority’s Irrinova Darek scheme will go live on Monday and will remain open until the end of February.

The minister responsible, Jonathan Attard, said the scheme is part of the government's long-term Vision 2050 plan.

"The scheme is not only about renovation but also about bringing a cultural change that emphasises sustainability," the construction reform minister said.

Under the scheme, the BCA will cover up to 90 per cent of costs for works that improve a home’s energy efficiency, through interventions such as replacing apertures with double-glazed windows, roof insulation, and replacing heating or air-conditioning systems with more energy-efficient options.

The government will also cover the cost of installing skylights or similar interventions (which reduce the need for artificial lighting), water heaters, and shading devices, which reduce sunlight and therefore the heat entering a property.

The BCA will cover up to €15,000 for these interventions.

Couples earning less than €50,000, and single persons earning less than €35,000, are eligible to have 90 per cent of the costs covered by the authority.

Couples earning more than €50,000, and single persons earning more than €35,000, will receive a grant of 75 per cent of the costs.

The scheme also includes a 50 per cent co-financing scheme for solar panels.

The Irrinova Darek scheme was first launched in February 2022 for residences in the inner harbour area.

It opened for those living in the north last July. In the round, a total of 2,200 households submitted an application, of which 1,900 were eligible.

This time around, residents from the south and some parts of central Malta are eligible.

The scheme covers the following localities: Birżebbuġa, Fgura, Għaxaq, Gudja, Ħamrun, Luqa, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Qormi, Paola, Santa Luċija, Santa Venera, Tarxien, Xgħajra, Żabbar and Żejtun.

Individuals may only apply for one residential property.

Properties that are not residential do not fall under the scheme.
