Karozzin driver jailed for 30 months for setting stable on fire
Kersten Catania admitted arson when he was arraigned last month
A 34-year-old karrozin driver has been jailed for 30 months for setting an empty stable on fire.
Kersten Catania from Marsa previously admitted arson, wilful damage to to third-party property and breaching the public peace.
He also breached two sets of bail conditions.
In its considerations on punishment, the court observed that an early guilty plea does not mean that the accused is to be given a “carte blanche”.
It observed that over the past four years, the accused did not show any willingness to abide by court-imposed orders, and that it its opinion the only suitable punishment in this case was effective imprisonment.
On Monday, the court handed Catania a 30-month prison term from which the period spent under preventive custody should be deducted.
The court ordered the forfeiture of €1,000 and a three-year restraining order was issued in favour of the victim.
Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit presided. AG lawyer Joseph Camilleri Azarov prosecuted, assisted by police inspectors Lydon Zammit and Keith Rizzo. Lawyer Yanica Barbara appeared for the accused.
