Kidney donations are diminishing, Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia said in reply to a parliamentary question.

He told Deo Debattista (PL) that the total number of patients waiting for transplants is currently 121. The greatest number, for kidneys,is 80 patients who have been waiting between one and four years.

The minister said some of the potential donors could not help because they were elderly or had suffered medical conditions.

The length of waiting also depended on blood types, with the list of O type cases being longer than the A types.

Thirty patients were waiting for cornea transplants, five for liver transplants, four for heart transplants and two for lung transplants.

The respective waiting times were between six months and a year, between six months and two years, between two years and less than a year, and between a year and 18 months.
