Labour's women group hint at rift with Ian Borg over Trump Nobel nomination
Nisa Laburisti say those who fuel racism and strip minorities of humanity should not be celebrated
Labour’s women’s organisation has hinted at its disagreement with Foreign Minister Ian Borg’s decision to nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, saying those who have stripped minorities of their humanity should not be celebrated.
In a social media post on Gaza, Nisa Laburisti said it was “useless to boast about peace when your actions leave behind a great divide fuelled by racism, classism, misogyny, xenophobia and homophobia.” The remark is widely seen as a veiled reference to Trump, whose nomination for the award was put forward by Borg earlier this week.
Venezuela’s opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was awarded the prize on Friday.
Borg’s nomination has sparked widespread criticism, not least from within his own party with PL president Alex Sciberras distancing himself from the statement saying he could “never endorse Trump – a man who espouses populist, anti-democratic discourse, who has waged a campaign against minorities and LGBTIQ rights, and who suppresses freedom of expression.”
Nisa Laburisti, in a social media statement, were less direct.
“Let us not forget, however, that those who boast about the peace they have brought to another land have ignited a raging fire within their own house in the past year, with lives lost and minorities stripped bare of their humanity.”
Welcoming the news of a ceasefire in Gaza, Nisa Laburisti said they hoped the agreement was "a permanent one".
“In the past two years, Gaza has become a tomb and its land has become nothing but rubble. Our tears will never be enough to feed starving children back to a life they once knew.”
