Lifeguards to be deployed to beaches from May 15

Red Cross will deploy more than 80 professionals across nine different beaches in Malta

Malta Red Cross lifeguards will start operating at various beaches across Malta on May 15 this year.

The Red Cross announced the start of its summer 2026 Coast Lifeguard Rescue Service in a statement on Saturday.

More than 80 trained professionals, ranging from lifeguards to emergency medical responders and specialist sea rescue operators, will be deployed to beaches every day from May 15 to the end of October between 9:30am and 6:00pm.

Beaches that will be serviced by Red Cross lifeguards include Għadira, Golden Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa, Buġibba Perched Beach, Qawra Point, Fond Għadir, St George’s Bay (St Julian’s), Fajtata and Pretty Bay.

Lifeguards will be supported by rapid response vehicles and dedicated sea rescue vessels operating from the Malta Red Cross Maritime Rescue Station in Mellieħa.

“In addition to beach operations, mobile emergency response teams tasked directly through the national 112 emergency system will respond to incidents across Malta’s coastal areas, helping ensure rapid medical and rescue intervention where required,”  the Malta Red Cross said.

The annual lifeguard rescue service is provided in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority. It is the second consecutive year that lifeguards will start overseeing beaches in May. In previous years the service began in June but that was revised due to the growing popularity of local beaches in the month of May.

Separately, the Tourism Zones Regeneration Agency said work is under way to add pathways to various bays.
