Why Malta Fashion Week gave me hope again
Judging by the creations presented this year, the future looks bright for the fashion industry in Malta
One of the things that originally drew me to the fashion world was the big personalities that used to inhabit it.
Isabella Blow, a walking art installation full of irreverence; Diana Vreeland, always bold in a bloody red and never conventional; the unmistakable and unforgettable Andre Leon Talley, a literal giant among men who used drama both in his appearance as well as in his words.
In a documentary called The September Issue, which was released almost 20 years ago, the latter said: “It’s a famine of beauty” when describing a particularly dull week in fashion, and I’ve definitely been able to relate to this now legendary line in the last decade or so. Several of the great fashion houses, once hubs of beauty and creativity, have just been recycling the same old tat, and it honestly scares me.
What future can fashion have when nothing new is being created cycle after cycle? Has everything that could be said really already been said?
