Man accused of drug trafficking, in the law courts building

The accused, who was on bail, handed a bag to another man as he waited outside a courtroom, prosecutors say

A man who was out on bail handed a small bag of cocaine to another man while he waited to enter a courtroom, a court heard on Sunday.

Prosecutors accused Ian Zammit, 35 of Zejtun, of drug trafficking, drug possession, and breaching bail. He pleaded not guilty.

The court was told that Zammit was observed on June 15 speaking with an accused person in front of Hall 12 at the law courts. A small bag containing a white substance was handed to the accused person.

A small bag containing a white substance was found in the possession of the accused man when he was taken to prison.

Subsequent forensic analysis allegedly confirmed that the substance was crack cocaine and it had been in Zammit’s possession prior to the transfer.

CCTV footage showed what had taken place.

Zammit was arrested on Saturday evening. No request for bail was made on Sunday.

Police inspector Elisia Scicluna and lawyer Av. Julian Scicluna from the Attorney General's Office prosecuted. Lawyers Franco Debono and Fleur Abela were defence counsel.
