33-year-old allegedly fired gun following argument with three others on Melita Street

A 33-year-old man arrested for allegedly firing a gun on a Paola street on Sunday has been identified as Melvin Debono, also known as Il-Quws.

While no injuries were reported in the alleged shooting, bullet fragments were found in Melita Street following the incident, which occurred at around 9pm, a police spokesperson said.

According to police, the suspect fired a gun after arguing with three other men. He briefly sought refuge in his residence, but shortly after, gave himself up following discussions with officers.

The police also found the alleged weapon.

Police are reportedly searching for another man involved in the argument that preceded the shooting. Debono is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.

Magistrate Monica Galea has been informed about the case.

Debono is a notorious figure within law enforcement circles, having had multiple brushes with the law for various offences.

He was arraigned earlier this year, charged with a raft of offences in connection with a high-speed car chase that led to a crash between the police's rapid intervention unit and a parked car.

A court granted him bail in that case after Debono’s lawyers Franco Debono and Marion Camilleri presented a probation officer as a witness who testified that Debono has shown “strong determination” to turn a fresh page.

It was the sixth time Debono was granted bail.
