Mqabba festive archway wins national Maltese craftsmanship award

The decorative artwork is used during the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady

The Santa Marija Society and the King George V Band Club of Mqabba, through its decorations section, has been awarded the Premju Nazzjonali Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2025 in the category of ‘Artisan products manufactured by local feasts’ organisers’.

It was awarded for an artistic three-dimensional archway (sopraporta) handcrafted for the annual feast of the Assumption of Our Lady. Commissioned by the Santa Marija Youth Section, the piece was created by the volunteers of the Santa Marija Decorations Section from a design by artist Manuel Grech.

During the feast, the artwork is installed at the entrance to Parish Street, directly opposite the parish church dedicated to St Mary.
