New US Ambassador to Malta ‘will not hesitate’ to pursue Trump agenda
Somers Farkas took up the role late last year, promising to strengthen ties between the US and Malta
US Ambassador to Malta Somers Farkas “will not hesitate to pursue” Donald Trump’s agenda, she said in an introductory video posted to the US Embassy’s social media channels.
Farkas, a Virginia-born former model, philanthropist and advertising executive, was nominated as ambassador to Malta in late 2024.
She has previously spoken of her plans to deepen trade and investment links between Malta and the US, particularly in the energy sector, saying Malta could become a destination for US LNG exports.
In a video posted to social media on Wednesday, Farkas said the US and Malta are connected by “a common commitment to independence, peace and prosperity,” as well as “a heritage built on shared democratic values”.
Farkas vowed to bolster economic ties, strengthen security collaboration and broaden cultural exchange between Malta and the US during her tenure. She also reiterated her commitment to developing further collaboration in the energy sector.
Farkas described herself as “eager to engage with the Maltese private sector and the government” to advance common interests.
She said she was “deeply grateful” to US President Donald Trump for the opportunity to serve as ambassador.
In a seemingly veiled reference to Trump’s increasingly contentious tactics on the international stage, Farkas said: “President Trump has taken bold actions and I will not hesitate to pursue his agenda”.
Farkas’ message comes amid growing US-EU tensions, following the Trump administration’s repeated threat to annex Greenland. On Saturday, Trump issued a series of punitive tariffs on several European countries who publicly opposed his move.
EU leaders, including Robert Abela, are set to gather in Brussels on Thursday for an emergency summit sparked by the dispute. On Wednesday, EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen vowed Europe's response to Trump's repeated threats would be "unflinching, united and proportional".
Farkas is the 21st American ambassador to Malta, replacing Constance J Milstein, who was appointed in 2022.
She previously served on President Trump’s Commission on White House Fellowships, supporting charitable efforts by several organisations, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Alzheimer’s Association, among others.
Her company, SW FARKAS, "creates and produces brand-enhancing events and cross-promotion opportunities that differentiate and generate goodwill" according to its website.
She is married to Jonathan Farkas, heir to Alexander’s department store, a popular New York retailer that shut down in 1992.
