Updated 5.30pm with Fortina statement

No one was hurt in a construction site incident in Sliema on Monday.

The police said that it appeared that equipment fell as it was being lifted by a crane at a site in Tigne'.

But Fortina Investments later clarified that an ‘elbow’ connected to a cement crane distributor had burst.

At no point were any surrounding buildings or workers in any danger, the company said.

The accident happened at about 3.15pm and neighbours initially feared that a building had collapsed when they heard the loud crashing sound.

The issue of construction site safety came to the fore again last month when a family home came crashing down into a neighbouring excavation site, claiming the life of a 54-year-old woman.

In a statement, Fortina Investments said the incident was restricted to the bursting of an ‘elbow’ connected to the cement crane distributor, which emitted a loud noise.

At no point were any surrounding buildings or workers in any danger.

"We would like to assure residents and readers that Fortina Investments abides by the highest international safety standards and the welfare of its employees is always its top priority."
