Open day on May 24 at Żabbar Sanctuary Museum
Entrance is free and there will be guided tours every hour
Żabbar Sanctuary Museum is opening its doors to the public for free on May 24, offering visitors a rare look at some of the most unusual items in Malta’s national collection.
Among the more macabre highlights is the original 1813 plague hearse − a chilling, wooden relic from the days when the ‘Black Death’ gripped the islands. The exhibit remains one of the few tangible links to a tragedy that decimated the population over two centuries ago.
For those with a keen interest in more recent local history, there is a dedicated section on the 1975 Vulcan bomber crash.
The sight of the aircraft exploding over the town is still a vivid memory for many older residents, and the museum houses the actual charred remains of the wreckage that fell onto the village streets.
The museum also boasts the largest collection of maritime ex-votos donated by the Knights, besides some fine hand-woven golden embroideries as well as donations given by various civil and religious societies of the village, among which is a silver replica of a motorcycle made by silversmith Michael Grech.
During the open day, the museum, which is located next door to the Żabbar parish church, will be open from 9am to 4pm.
Entrance is free and there will be guided tours every hour.
