Participatory performance confronts gender-based violence

‘Għaliex?’, being staged across the Maltese islands until July 31, encourages the audience to step into the action

A new participatory theatre production tackling gender-based violence is inviting audiences across the Maltese islands to do more than simply watch − they are encouraged to step into the action.

Għaliex? is based on the theatrical work Għaliex Jien? by Maltese playwright Vincent Vella. The story follows Wallis (Angele Galea), a professional make-up artist working in the film industry, whose life is disrupted when she is forced to confront Bertie Rodgers (George Micallef), a powerful film director from her past.

Through their encounter, the play explores themes of power, control, exploitation, trauma and the ways abusive behaviour can be hidden behind professional success and social status.
