A 41-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to causing the death of Joey Cutajar, an AFM soldier who was killed in a traffic accident in Għajnsielem earlier this week.
Dominic Peter Hedges, a UK national living in Gozo, was arraigned on Saturday morning in Gozo in connection with the Thursday evening accident.
Cutajar, 44, was driving a motorcycle at around 6.45 pm on Triq Borg Għarib when he was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Polo driven by Hedges.
Hedges was charged with involuntary homicide, reckless and dangerous driving and speeding. He was also charged with failing to change direction or overtake another vehicle carefully and for damaging Cutajar’s motorcycle.
Hedges pleaded not guilty.
A request for bail was made, but was objected by the prosecution on the basis of the gravity of the charges and the premature stages of the proceedings.
The court denied the bail request.
Cutajar was the first road victim of 2026.
Magistrate Jean Paul Grech presided. Inspector Keith Xerri prosecuted. Lawyers Dejan Darmanin and Mauro Abela appeared on behalf of the Attorney General.
