The police said this afternoon that according to preliminary investigations, this morning's incident in Iklin where a truck smashed into Maypole Confectionery happened after the driver's cabin tilted forward as the truck was coming downhill towards Birkirkara. The truck then hit a centre strip and crashed at speed into the shop.

Rescuers had to cut through the wreckage to reach the driver- a 32-year-old Libyan - who is being treated in hospital. His injuries are life threatening.

Two female shop assistants were also taken to hospital. One suffered slight injuries and the other suffered shock.

The incident happened at around 10.45 a.m.

The popular confectionery is located at the top of Geronimo Abos Street, facing a roundabout and traffic coming down from Naxxar.

The facade of the shop, including one of the door jamps, were badly damaged and officials on the scene requested equipment to prop up the shop facade before the truck could be pulled out.
