PL confirm leadership trio, including Robert Abela
Alex Agius Saliba, as deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, and Ian Borg, deputy leader for party affairs, were also confirmed.
The Labour Party confirmed Prime Minister Robert Abela as party leader on Wednesday night following a vote.
Alex Agius Saliba, as deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, and Ian Borg, deputy leader for party affairs, were also confirmed.
Under party rules, PL delegates must confirm the PL leadership after a general election, even if the party has won the election.
In a statement, the PL said: “Prime Minister Robert Abela has been confirmed by a strong majority as Labour Party leader, following a vote by the delegates during the Labour Party’s Extraordinary General Conference.”
“(The vote) reflects the delegates’ recognition of the work carried out by the PL leadership in the fourth consecutive and historic victory, thus remaining the largest political force in Malta,” the party said in a statement.
The statement did not specify whether Abela’s confirmation was unanimous, although a picture sent by the party indicates that 95 per cent of the 600 or so delegates voted in favour of Abela.
Borg received 97.7 per cent, while Agius Saliba received 91.6 per cent of support, Labour's media arm, ONE, reported.
Abela said he was grateful to PL delegates for the “strong vote of confidence” in him and the party leadership. He said the outcome represented recognition of the work carried out in recent years and reinforced the party’s responsibility to deliver on its commitments to the Maltese people.
The General Conference, “INT Malta: Il-Ħolma tiegħek, il-Proġett tagħna”, comes to an end tomorrow evening. It will be addressed by Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Robert Abela, the two deputy leaders, Ian Borg and Alex Agius Saliba, as well as Labour Party president Alex Sciberras.
