PL's podcast releases first episode as PN says its own will come 'in due course'

Both parties are betting on podcasts to reach new audiences but only Labour has gone live

Labour has announced the first episode of its party podcast will be released on Wednesday, with the PN saying its podcast will begin "in due course".

Both parties announced plans for podcasts in recent months as a way to appeal to diverse audiences.

During his leadership campaign, Alex Borg pledged to set up a Nationalist Party podcast , saying it was among the ways the party would reach younger voters.

It also ran a crowdfunding drive to kickstart the project late last year, collecting €15,000 through a crowdfunding campaign to support the party’s podcast.

Soon after, the PL unveiled details of its own podcast, Isma Dean, hosted by lawyer and activist Dean Hili.

At the time, Borg said the Labour Party was copying the PN’s idea.

“The PL wants to copy us and will have its own podcast. Don’t worry, we lead and they follow,” he told a cheering crowd on December 15.

PL CEO Leonid McKay was at pains to avoid claims of his party copying the PN, saying the podcast project was announced in a December 2024 fundraiser by deputy leader Alex Agius Saliba and was not a copycat move.

The PL’s Isma Dean released its first episode on Wednesday, featuring the prime minister’s wife Lydia Abela as a guest.

In the episode, Abela emphasises the importance of wellbeing and mental health. She says mental health is fundamental to building self-confidence and overcoming anxiety.

On Tuesday, Times of Malta asked a PN spokesperson when the podcast is coming out and whether the party could provide any details about the online programme.

“Details about the PN podcast will be announced in due course,” the Nationalist Party said.
