PN approves six new candidates for upcoming general election

Three will be contesting for the first time

The Nationalist Party has approved six new election candidates during a meeting of the party’s executive committee at Dar Ċentrali headquarters.

Three of the candidates will be contesting a general election for the first time, the party noted in a statement announcing the candidates.

John Baptist Camilleri, an aviation engineer and Marsascala local councillor – where he serves as minority leader – will contest the third electoral district, alongside prominent orthopaedic consultant Ray Gatt.

Gatt’s approval was first reported by Times of Malta on Sunday, when party insiders described him as one of the PN’s “star” candidates.

Teacher Stefan Caruana, who serves as PN executive organisational secretary, will contest the fourth electoral district, while lawyer and Balzan mayor Angelo Micallef will campaign in the eighth.

Lawyer Jonathan Muscat will contest the ninth electoral district, while law student and iGaming sector worker Rachel Williams, who currently serves on the St Paul’s Bay local council, will campaign in the twelfth.

Gatt, Muscat and Williams will be campaigning in a general election for the PN for the first time; Carauana contested in 2022, while Baptist Camilleri and Micallef contested during the last two elections, the party noted.

The approvals bring the total number of approved PN candidates to 34.

Opposition Leader Alex Borg thanked the candidates during the meeting, with the party noting that the process to identify and approve further candidates was ongoing.

“The PN’s team of candidates includes new faces, others who have already contested with the PN in previous elections, women and young people, as well as a number of Gozitan candidates”, it said.
