PN MP Ryan Callus will not contest next general election

Says he wants more time with his young family

Nationalist MP Ryan Callus has said he will not contest the forthcoming general election.

He has been an MP since 2013, having previously served as deputy mayor of his hometown, Siġġiewi.

An engineer by profession and holder of a private pilot's licence, Callus was elected from two districts in the last election. Last June, as Roberta Metsola was being urged to stand for PN leader, Callus said he was prepared to give up his seat for the next PN leader should the candidate not be an MP already.

During his parliamentary career he has served as shadow minister for energy, planning, lands and the infrastructure. He said his publication of a 30-year strategy for the energy sector was among his most satisfying moments.

In a Facebook post he said he had taken the 'difficult' decision not to contest the next election in order to have more time for his young family.

He would, however, continue to support the PN and its leader, Alex Borg, who, he said, was giving new hope to the people of Malta and Gozo.

Callus thanked all those who helped him throughout his political life and those who trusted him with their vote.
