Residents of Kalkara's Dar il-Wens care home relocated

Care home was taken over on government orders last February

Residents of a Kalkara care home that was taken over on government orders earlier this year have been relocated to alternative accommodation due to structural concerns about the care home building.

The decision to relocate Dar il-Wens residents was taken on the basis of a report into the care home’s structural integrity provided to the Social Care Standards Authority (SCSA) on August 7.

Dar il-Wens is one of three homes operated by Fondazzjoni Wens, a private foundation which had control of its homes seized in February following reports of “shocking” living conditions and care standards.

The takeover involved a subsidiary of private care providers Care Malta assuming control of the homes.

Fondazzjoni Wens homes housed 43 people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

In a statement on Saturday, the Social Policy Ministry said that the report into the building housing the care home prepared by administrators indicated that it would be in residents’ best interests to be moved elsewhere.

“The findings clearly showed that it was in the best interests of residents and workers to adopt preventative measures,” the ministry said.

Families of Dar il-Wens residents have been kept informed throughout, it said.
