Restoration of Qolla l-Bajda battery

Infringements to be removed, original character reinstated, public access reopened at the historic site

Gozo’s oldest surviving battery – the 18th century Qolla l-Bajda Battery in Qbajjar – is being entrusted to Din l-Art Ħelwa, more than two decades after this transfer was recommended by the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.

Members of Din l-Art Ħelwa Għawdex Daniel Cilia and Luke Said recently met in Victoria where they discussed a number of ideas for this project over a cup of coffee.

Built by the Order of St John, this important historic site is set to undergo a programme of restoration aimed at removing infringements, reinstating its original character and reopening it to the public.

Working hand in hand with public authorities and agencies, Din l-Art Ħelwa Għawdex remains committed to preserving Gozo’s rich heritage for the enjoyment of present and future generations.
