Simon Busuttil and Jason Azzopardi have appealed a Speaker's ruling blocking questions about the personal relationship between the Prime Minister's chief of staff and the former chairman of Pilatus Bank.

In a statement, the two Nationalist Party MPs said that the speaker in a democratic country should be allowing such questions, rather than blocking them.

Earlier this week, speaker Anġlu Farrugia disallowed questions about Keith Schembri's presence at the wedding of Ali Sadr Hasheminejad, saying the matter was concerned the private, and not public conduct of a member of the public administration.

It was the third question by Dr Busuttil on Mr Schembri which was disallowed by the Speaker. A similar question by Dr Azzopardi was also blocked.

The PN MPs are now seeking to have that ruling revised following a debate and vote on the matter by parliamentarians.

Mr Hasheminejad was arrested in the US last month on charges of having dodged US sanctions. He faces up to 125 years in jail if found guilty.
