Seven-floor block proposed near San Ġwann church

Planned development would rise higher than the parish church

An existing building near the San Ġwann parish church could be converted into a seven-floor apartment block with a garage and shops.

The planning application  (PA/04370/26), filed by Christopher Micallef with Paul Camilleri as his architect, would see most of the existing office space turned into residential units, with three overlying floors and a recessed top floor paving the way for 20 flats and a penthouse.

An existing showroom in the building will also be split up into smaller retail shops.

The development proposal for Misraħ Lourdes is a stone’s throw away from the parish church, and if approved, it would stand taller than the church.

Trevor Fenech, the minority leader of the San Ġwann local council, criticised the plan on Facebook.

He said the surroundings of the parish church are no place for a development of this size. Moreover, the development itself would leave a negative impact on the San Ġwann centre.

“I will be encouraging the local council, which I am part of, to file a formal objection to the application as presented.”
