'Small fire' breaks out at db St George's Bay development
The fire broke out at an outlet under construction in the shopping mall
A fire broke out at a shopping outlet under construction at db Group’s St George’s Bay development on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson for the group said the “small fire” broke out in one of the shops within the shopping mall, which was still under construction and not open to the public.
The fire was “quickly contained” and “nobody was hurt”, the spokesperson said.
Restaurants at the development seemed unaffected when Times of Malta visited the scene, and hotel employees had begun to return inside the building by around 9.15am.
Officers from the Civil Protection Department were on site.
Police said they were notified of the fire at around 8.40am.
The cause of the blaze remains unclear.
The shopping outlet at the development is set to feature a large shopping mall with a variety of retail outlets, a PAVI-PAMA supermarket, several catering establishments, and a car park facility for patrons.
The mall will be run by db Gauci Shopping Mall Limited, a subsidiary of PG plc, which announced the shopping mall project in September last year.
The shopping outlet will be the third in the area, joining the nearby Bay Street Shopping Complex and Mercury Shopping District.
The sprawling mega-development at St George’s Bay, built on the former Institute of Tourism Studies site, will also include a Hard Rock Hotel and luxury apartments, as well as bars and restaurants.
