South Africa footballer Jayden Adams has died just weeks after playing in the World Cup in the US.

International news outlets report the 25-year-old central midfielder was found dead on Saturday at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, as details of the circumstances of his death are still emerging.

While no official statement has been released by his club Mamelodi Sundowns or the South African Football Association, local media report sources close to the player and his club and former team Stellenbosch FC confirmed the news of his death.

South Africa’s Times Live reports a WhatsApp message sent by a senior Stellenbosch official to club members said: “It is incredibly sad to inform you that Jayden Adams has passed away this morning. The circumstances are not clear at this stage.”

Adams played three matches for the South African national team during the World Cup last month. The team advanced to the knockout stage for the first time in its history but lost 0-1 to Canada in the Round of 16.

South Africa sports minister Gayton McKenzie paid tribute to Adams saying “South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents”.
