Strong winds forecast through Thursday

A strong west-northwesterly wind is expected on Thursday

July will be off to a windy start this year, with strong winds forecast from late Wednesday evening into the early hours of Friday.

The Meteorological Office told Times of Malta that wind from the west-northwest direction is forecast to start increasing as from late Wednesday evening till early Thursday morning.

The wind, which will remain moderate to rather strong at first, will then increase to strong by Thursday evening.

However, temperatures will range between 30°C and 31°C, compared to the July norm of 32°C.

The Met Office attributes the change to a cold front approaching over Sicily, which it says will bring instability across much of Italy and Sicily.

The sea is expected to remain moderate for a time, and occasional showers are possible. The Met Office says this is not unusual for July.

The Gozo-based Emergency Response Rescue Corps has warned the public to take extra care if planning to head to the coast.

“Although there is currently no official weather warning, changing sea conditions can become dangerous very quickly, particularly for visitors and anyone unfamiliar with Malta's coastline,” it said in a Facebook post.

It advised the public to check sea conditions and follow the advice of lifeguards before entering the water.
