Triq il-Gudja road project concluded

Vjal Kulħadd project adds segregated cycling lane and more shrubbery

Works on a road linking Luqa and Gudja have been completed following a redesign aimed at making the route safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Triq il-Gudja project forms part of Vjal Kulħadd, a government scheme launched in 2024 to fund street redesigns that make roads and public spaces less car-centric and more accessible to people walking or using bicycles.

The redesigned road now includes a segregated lane for cyclists and pedestrians, creating a safer connection between the two localities, the Infrastructure Ministry said. New trees and shrubs have been planted along the route, it added.

Transport Minister Chris Bonett said the project formed part of the government’s 'Malta in Motion' plan, which among other things aims to encourage alternative transport by providing dedicated space for walking and cycling.

Gudja mayor Romeo Baldacchino said residents were already walking more in the area because it had become safer.

Luqa mayor John Schembri said the project had been expected by residents of both localities and followed cooperation between the two local councils.

Vjal Kulħadd was originally launched as a €10 million Infrastructure Malta fund through which local councils and NGOs could apply for projects to make streets, village cores and public spaces safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists.

Around 40 local councils applied for projects under the scheme. Infrastructure Malta has since confirmed 14 such projects.
