Valletta fast ferry terminal repairs near completion after Storm Harry damage
Transport Minister says storm had left 'devastating' damage at the terminal
Repair works on the fast ferry terminal in Valletta are expected to be completed in the coming days after the devastation of January’s Storm Harry.
The storm, which lashed Malta on January 20 bringing severe gale force winds, high waves and widespread disruption for over 24 hours, caused extensive damage to coastal infrastructure.
The fast ferry terminal in Valletta bore the brunt of the storm, with “devastating repercussions”.
On Tuesday evening, Transport Minister Chris Bonett revealed intensive repair works, which had started immediately after the storm, are now nearing completion.
“Works should be completed in the coming days,” Bonett said in a social media post
Storm Harry caused over €12 million in insured damage, with total losses likely even higher due to claims filed with overseas insurers, industry figures show.
Local insurers received 751 claimes liked to the damages but the president of the Insurance Association, Catherine Calleja, believes the true figure could be “several million euros higher”.
Għar Lapsi, which was decimated during the storm, will cost €2 million to restore.
