An elderly man was killed this morning after he was run over by a car as he was crossing the road in Rabat.

The incident happened at 8.30am when the man, a 97-year-old from Rabat, was crossing the road in Vjal il-Ħaddiem. The victim, who was on his routine walk, according to residents, was hit by a Toyota Townace driven by a 48-year-old, also from Rabat.

He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital but he succumbed to his injuries later.

Duty magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech appointed an inquiry. 

In another incident, a 35-year-old driver was injured after a van ploughed into a tree in Marsa after crashing into a billboard.

The taxi van crashed into a tree in Aldo Moro Street, close to the Scan computer shop, as it was heading towards Paola. It also toppled a roadside billboard in the process. The incident happened around 7am.

An ambulance and Civil Protection personnel were on scene to help the driver from Marsascala. The driver suffered grievous injuries.

The van was not carrying other passengers. 

Police are investigating both incidents.
