Tuna exports to Japan ‘under close scrutiny’

Malta’s bluefin tuna exports to Japan have come under scrutiny following discrepancies between local export figures and Japanese import figures. Japan complained through the ICCAT that more Maltese tuna is reaching the Japanese market than official figures show.

PM back from China visit

Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami returned from China yesterday confident that the visit would lead to greater cooperation between the two countries. “We now wait for contacts in the coming months and hopefully, visits by delegations from China,” he said.

Nigerian turns himself in

A Nigerian national who was being sought by the police for questioning in connection with the disappearance of a newborn baby, turned himself in at the Qawra police station.

Opera House site proposals

New proposals for development of the former opera house site are being considered, Environment Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said.

Buses stop over fare dispute

Public transport will today grind to a halt for the second time in little more than a month if no solution is found to the bus owners’ claim for an increase in fare to offset higher rates of pay proposed by the Public Transport Wages Council which came into effect on April 29.

The 450 route bus owners will discharge all their employees today if their claim for an immediate rise in far by 1d is not met.

The Police yesterday called vehicles to be pressed into service if the stoppage materialises. Hundreds of trucks, ambulances, vans, Landrovers, and cars were taken to the Granaries, Floriana, for registration and for instructions.

Hotel planned for Xwieni

Alfred Pisani, managing director of the Co­rin­thia Palace Hotel, announced that he had sent an application to the Malta Development Corporation for the building of a 720-bed hotel at ix-Xwieni, near Marsalforn.

Air Melita developments

Two directors have been appointed to replace Mr Cecil and Mr Henry Pace who resigned from the board of directors last week. These are Dr Antoine Cachia and Mr Joseph Debono.
