Xewkija Rotunda works completed in time for St John the Baptist feast
Celebration is being held on Sunday
The restoration of the lantern on top of the dome of the Rotunda church in Xewkija has been completed. The project, which started in 2024, cost €156,283.27 and was concluded a few days before the feast of St John the Baptist, which is being celebrated on Sunday.
This year restoration works were also carried out on the Rotunda’s bell tower after it was struck by lightning. The lightning strike has also caused significant damage to various electronic systems, including the organ, sound system, lift, CCTV cameras and radio equipment.
Maintenance works have also been completed on the wooden cross at the highest point of the dome.
The project also included the installation of a new lightning protection system on the dome, aimed at reducing the risk of future damage while enhancing the overall safety and resilience of the building.
The work has been carried out by the Rotunda Association. A spokesperson for the association said every effort was made to respond effectively and manage the various interventions with coordination and responsibility. Recent projects reflect the association’s ongoing commitment not only to preserve this important community heritage, but also to ensure that it remained safer, more accessible and relevant to the needs of today’s community, the spokesperson said.
