Former Malta champion Alfred Borg, who won the Malta title no fewer than 14 times, passed away yesterday, aged 80.

Borg was a pioneer of cue sport on our shores, having won his first national championship way back in 1952. He also represented the country on various occasions in international tournaments.

In the early days of his career, Borg was engaged in epic finals against Wilfred Asciak and Pullu Grech and later on he had to rely on all his vast experience to stave off the challenge of emerging talent Paul Mifsud.

Borg won his last championship in 1977.
