Jewellery and cash were stolen in broad daylight in a hold-up on Sterling Jewellers in St George's Road, St Julians, yesterday, the police said.

A police spokesman said the sales assistants called for help at about 5.10 p.m., saying a robbery had taken place.

A hooded male reportedly ran into the shop and pointed a pistol at a salesman, 29, before demanding money. According to eyewitness accounts, the robber fled with the jewellery and cash on foot.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The hold-up is being investigated by the St Julians District Police together with the Criminal Investigation Department.

An inquiry has been opened by Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit.
