A unique nuclear shelter at l-Gharusa tal-Mosta Garden is to be rehabilitated and opened to the public by the town's council.

Mayor Paul Chetcuti Caruana said the rehabilitation of the shelter was part of the upgrading of the garden, which incorporated an area of more than 25,000 square metres.

A cafeteria was being planned as well as public toilets and lifts, to make the shelter more accessible.

The council also wanted to transform an existing building in the garden into an animal sanctuary, replace play equipment and upgrade the paving, landscaping and electricity of the garden.

It wanted the garden toform part of a heritage trail since it was situated on the Victoria Lines and was close to the ta' Bistra Catacombs.
