Fewer passengers crossed between Malta and Gozo in the second quarter of this year, although more ferry trips were performed, the NSO said today.
It said 1,008,124 passengers made the crossing, down by 2.7 percent compared to the same period in 2008. However, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 3.5 per cent, totalling 274,521.
May was the month which saw the most commuters - 346,697. April was the only month which registered increases in commuters, up by 2.2 per cent. This could be attributed to the fact that Easter this year was in April, whereas in 2008 it was in March, the NSO said.
The number of trips in the second quarter stood at 4,913, an increase of 1.1 percent over the comparable period the previous year.
The highest number of trips was recorded in June - 1,686 or 34.3 percent of the total number of trips for the period under review
