Thousands of people took part in processions behind statues of Our Lady of Sorrows throughout Malta and Gozo today in what is regarded as the opening of Holy Week.
Archbishop Paul Cremona led the procession from Ta' Giezu Church in Valletta.
Some people walked barefoot in a sign of sacrifice.
Earlier in the day most schools also organised Masses and some also held small processions.
Archbishop Cremona will also lead a national Holy Week pilgrimage on Wednesday evening in Birkirkara.
