A parked car which was shot at in Manikata on Saturday afternoon was being used by BirdLife volunteers, it has emerged.

The car, a Hyundai, had its rear windscreen shattered by gunshots, BirdLife has reported on its website. No one was injured.

The police on Saturday reported that a parked car had been shot at but gave no further details.

The NGO also said that two volunteers were thrown to the ground and beaten in an incident in Dingli yesterday.

It said its teams had filmed several instances of illegal hunting. A number of volunteers were verbally insulted and a death threat was verbally made to a volunteer in Mtahleb yesterday.

Swastikas were painted on rubble walls in Dingli, a message, possibly, for 'bird guards' from the German-based NGO CABS.

A spokesman for BirdLife said those who were breaking the law with impunity were getting away while birdwatchers who were trying to report the illegalities to the police were under constant attack by individuals in the countryside.
