Stop humiliating the force, PN spokesman tells Police Commissioner

The Police Commissioner should stop humiliating himself and the police force, PN home affairs spokesman Jason Azzopardi said this morning as has called on the Commissioner to stop playing with words.

He was referring to a statement issued by the police yesterday in reply to a press conference he gave earlier.

During the news conference, Dr Azzopardi said that contrary to what he had claimed, the Commissioner did not request any call logs or other information from any service provider related to the controversy over a man who was wrongly accused of a hold-up.

The police said in a reply that Dr Azzopardi's argument was 'legally and factually baseless' as what was said was that the police had a call log.

In a statement this morning, Dr Azzopardi said that no play with words could hide or delete what the Commissioner said in replies to the media and in a public statement in August.

On both occasions he repeatedly referred to the Data Protection Law which was the only way that Security Service police could request service providers for call profiles when investigating serious crimes, he said.

Dr Azzopardi said it was clear that the Commissioner always started from the point that he had to cover up whatever the Home Affairs Minister’s chief of staff Silvio Scerri did. So the goalposts were moved whenever Mr Scerri was caught out.

This made it more clear than ever before that the Prime Minister had appointed an incompetent Commissioner who was just a partisan tool in the Government’s hand.

The commissioner, he said, should stop humiliating himself and the police force.
