A total of 121 people were fined €100 each on Monday for being in groups of more than three, a figure that is even higher than that registered on Easter Sunday.

Gatherings of more than three were outlawed as part of the measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The government said in its daily COVID-19 bulletin that 430 inspections had been carried out in the last 24 hours and no one was found breaking mandatory quarantine.

Monday's figure is one of the highest since the rule came into force at the end of March, surpassing even that of Easter Sunday, when a total of 104 people had been fined.

The fines issued on Monday came a day after the health authorities announced on Sunday that no new coronavirus cases were registered overnight. Despite the good news, announced by Health Minister Chris Fearne and Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci, the authorities have insisted social distancing measures still needed to be followed.

Gauci has repeatedly stated during her daily briefing that despite the low number of cases and the virus's rate of reproduction going down, people have to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary contact with others.

Although confirming some measures might be lifted in the coming days, Fearne and Gauci have both insisted all measures are still in place.
