BBC Concert Orchestra draws audience of over 12,000 – MTA
A recording of the concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on October 26
Last night’s BBC Concert Orchestra performance of music by pop legends ABBA and Bee Gees drew an audience of over 12,000, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has said.
The evening saw an orchestra of more than 70 musicians take to the stage, joined by vocalists Natalie Paris, Nathan James, Oliver Tompsett and Kirsten Joy.
UK television personality Rylan Clark presented the concert.
In a statement Sunday, the authority described Saturday night’s concert at the Granaries in Floriana as a “spectacular celebration of two of the world's most iconic pop groups”.
“Audiences sang and danced along to timeless hits from ABBA and the Bee Gees, transforming the Granaries into one giant celebration of music and creating another unforgettable night of world-class entertainment.”
A recording of the concert will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on October 26 as part of the station’s special disco season, the MTA noted.
The authority extended its thanks to the performers, technical crews, partners and audience “who contributed to making the seventh edition another outstanding success”.
"Audiences sang and danced along", the authority said. Photo: MTA.Tourism Minister Jo Etienne Abela said the concert had confirmed Malta’s ability to host international-level cultural events that enhance Malta’s tourism experience.
“Events like this not only offer an artistic spectacle of a high standard, but also attract visitors to Malta, extend economic activity, and continue to strengthen our country’s reputation as a cultural destination throughout the year,” he said.
This year’s concert was the seventh in the series, with last year’s edition seeing the BBC orchestra perform music celebrating pop songs from the 1980s.
Special bus routes operated last night to help those attending Saturday's concert get home.
