Contract for levelling works for new Gozo airfield due shortly

Task force considering expansion of Mġarr Harbour

The government will shortly issue the first tenders for levelling works for a new 'rural airfield' in Gozo, Minister Clinton Camilleri has said.

The new airfield will be an extension of the existing facility in Xewkija which was built for the operation of helicopters some years ago. Plans were approved by the Planning Authority in October 2024, subject to an archaeological study and other conditions being satisfied. The permit will see the existing 174-metre runway extended to 445 metres.

The minister, who was speaking at a public discussion on connectivity, said the facility will improve links between Malta and Gozo and possibly other nearby destinations. It will also create new economic opportunities, such as encouraging flight schools to relocate from Malta to Gozo as well as activities such as sky diving and the testing of drones.

Task force considers extension of Mġarr Harbour

During the meeting, the minister also pointed out that a government-appointed task force is considering infrastructural development of Mġarr harbour, including expansion of the port and the building of an alternative road.

Times of Malta reported on Sunday that Mġarr harbour has become “saturated” with passenger and vehicle numbers in 2025, shattering the most extreme growth projections set for 2026. In a report, the Gozo Regional Development Authority said the port, which serves as Gozo’s sole gateway, is currently struggling to balance its conflicting roles as a passenger terminal, vehicle ferry port, and freight logistics hub amid rising economic pressures and tourist influx.

Concerns have also been expressed over the years that the harbour relies on a single road, part of which is built over boathouses.

Camilleri said the new task force includes various government entities and local councils.

New fast ferry connections

The minister also referred to the success of the fast ferry service and said that new additional services between Mġarr, Buġibba and Sliema will be introduced in the near future.

The government, he pointed out, has also announced plans to add another ferry to the Gozo Channel fleet and replace one of the existing ships.
