Kurt Farrugia tipped for Residency Malta CEO post

Farrugia could succeed Jonathan Cardona, who died in June

Kurt Farrugia is being tipped for the top post at Residency Malta, following his expected departure from Transport Malta.

On Monday, Times of Malta reported that Farrugia is set to leave his post as Transport Malta CEO, following a breakdown in his relationship with minister Chris Bonett.

Sources on Monday acknowledged that Farrugia was likely to be offered a top job at another state entity.

Times of Malta has confirmed that Farrugia is being considered for the post of Residency Malta CEO, succeeding Jonathan Cardona who died early in June.

Residency Malta is the state entity responsible for managing residency programmes for non-EU nationals who move to Malta.

Among other things, it manages Malta’s digital nomad scheme, allowing remote workers to live in Malta while retaining their employment abroad. It also operates a residence and visa programme, a residence-by-investment scheme granting people permanent residence in Malta.

The news was first reported by MaltaToday on Tuesday afternoon.

Farrugia declined to comment on the story when first contacted on Monday, saying he remains Transport Malta CEO. Attempts to contact him on Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

A former Labour journalist and editor, Farrugia served as government strategist and communications chief between 2013 and 2019.

He was later named Malta Enterprise CEO, before moving to Transport Malta in 2024.

He has continued to play a key role within the Labour Party over the years, forming part of a tight-knit group of operators managing the party’s electoral campaigns.
