Malta's love affair with cars hits a record high
Almost one in eight people now own more than one car
More than 73,000 people own more than one vehicle, with 465 owning over 10, according to data shared in parliament.
This represents an increase of 18,000 people owning multiple cars, when compared to October 2024. Back then, 55,000 individuals owned more than one vehicle, meaning the number of people owning multiple cars rose by 33 per cent in just one year.
It also means that almost one in eight people now own more than one car, based on Malta’s total population of 574,250. Just over a year ago, the figure stood at nearly one in 10.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett revealed the data on Tuesday in response to a parliamentary question by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ. The figures refer to personal vehicles, not commercial ones.
According to information he provided in parliament,165,603 people own one vehicle. This is around 5,000 fewer than last year. This was the only category to register a decrease, as all others saw increases.
The number of people owning two vehicles rose to 45,476 - an increase of roughly 6,000 compared to last year.
The data also shows that 21,708 people own three to four vehicles - an increase of more than 8,000.
Meanwhile, 4,731 people own five to seven vehicles - up by 2,864, and 950 people own eight to 10 vehicles - an increase of nearly 700.
The number of people owning more than 10 vehicles also rose, increasing by 326 individuals.
According to the latest figures issued by the National Statistics Office, Malta had 454,000 vehicles registered on the road in Q3 2025.
