Police make third drug arrest in Marsa in one week

Man held after tip-off he was 'possibly selling drugs' in Spencer Garden

A man was arrested on Friday evening on suspicion of drug trafficking and possession, the third such arrest in Marsa this week.

Police said the 42-year-old man, originally from Niger and residing in Marsascala, was arrested following a tip-off that he was “acting suspiciously” in Spencer Garden and “possibly selling drugs”.

Searches carried out on the man revealed around 30 packets containing a substance suspected to be cannabis, a block of suspected cannabis, as well as a container with a substance suspected to be cannabis resin, along with cash.

The man is being held in police lock-up for further investigation and is expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

In a statement issued on Saturday, police delivered a “clear message” about substance abuse, emphasising their zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of abuse and illegal activity.

“This abuse will not be tolerated,” police said.

“The Police Force urges the public to continue cooperating and to report any information that may help keep the community safe for everyone.”

On Wednesday, police arrested two men in Marsa after they were found carrying a total of 67 packets of synthetic cannabis between them.

On February 15 a homeless Sudanese man was also arrested in Marsa and found to be carrying 30 sachets of cannabis, six sachets of synthetic cannabis and cash. He was jailed for 24 months.
