'Our hearts are broken': Family pays tribute to victim of cement mixer crash

Anthony Saliba died when the truck he was driving hit an electricity pole in Siġġiewi

A 60-year-old cement mixer truck driver who died in an accident on Friday afternoon has been named as Anthony Saliba.

Saliba, better known as Iz-Zampa, died on site when the truck he was driving hit an electricity pole near the Dar tal-Providenza, Siġġiewi.

Saliba's children posted about the tragedy on Facebook, with his son announcing that his father's funeral will be held on Wednesday at 3.30 pm at the parish church of his hometown Żebbuġ.

In a Facebook post on a Żebbuġ residency group, his daughter, Mattea Saliba, praised her father for his "sense of quiet wisdom" and said he was always ready to help others.

"While our hearts are broken by his loss, we are grateful for the memories he has left us, moments of happiness, encouragement and a life full of love."

He was also described as the "strong pillar of the family", who worked constantly to make sure his family was happy and had everything it needed.

"There are not enough words to describe how much you mean to us or to thank you for all you have done for us."

This was the third road fatality this year. Last month a 70-year old woman died two days after being hit by a car in Mġarr. A 44-year old motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car in Għajnsielem in February.
