Volleyball marathon raises record €707,586 sum for Dar tal-Providenza
40 players in five teams played volleyball for 53 hours
A record sum of €707,586 was raised during the 16th edition of the BOV Volleyball Marathon in aid of Dar tal-Providenza which came to a close on Saturday at 11pm after 53 hours of continuous play.
The marathon was held for the first time at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre in Ta’ Qali between Thursday and Saturday.
A total of 40 players in five teams played volleyball continuously for 53 hours.
Mgr Martin Micallef, Director of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, thanked the Maltese people, who “once again responded with great generosity” to the appeal for funds for this fundraising campaign.
He also thanked the players, volunteers, the organising committee, sponsors, television stations that broadcasted the event, presenters, singers and bands, the police, the Armed Forces of Malta Band, and all those who contributed in one way or another to the marathon's success.
The marathon was opened on Thursday by the President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono as Prime Minister Robert Abela donated €20,000 from the Social Causes Fund.
The Home requires approximately €8 million annually to continue offering its service and live up to its mission.
Since its establishment in 1965, Id-Dar tal-Providenza has provided residential services to persons with disabilities within a supportive environment.
