Met Office issues red heat warning as temperatures set to hit 40°C this weekend
Public urged to stay cool, drink water and avoid strenuous activity between 11am and 4pm
The Met Office has raised its warning to the highest level as the temperature is set to hit 40°C this weekend for the first time this summer.
On Thursday, the Met Office issued a red weather warning urging people to “take action” as the temperature is forecast to be 40°C on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the first heatwave of the year.
An orange weather warning is currently in place for Thursday and Friday as temperatures hover around 37°C before soaring to a scorching 40°C.
The Ministry of Health has urged people to keep cool and well hydrated and to stay out of the sun.
Earlier this week, the Malta Red Cross warned the heat “should not be underestimated” after a young person lost consciousness and suffered heatstroke.
They Red Cross said several people have required medical assistance in recent days due to the heat, as the team responded to “multiple heat-related emergencies” across beaches, public spaces and homes.
They suggested a few “simple precautions” as temperatures are set to rise, urging people to drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear a hat and light breathable clothing and stay in the shade whenever possible,
They also suggested strenuous activity should be avoided during the hottest hours between 11am and 4pm.
