Man charged with threatening to kill wife and daughter

A man who allegedly threatened his family and police officers was this morning remanded in custody since “it did not look like he was able to look after himself”.

Joseph Cauchi, 66, Hamrun was charged with harassing, offending and threatening his wife and his daughter.

He was also charged with breaching the peace, threatening four police officers and relapsing.

Police inspector Joseph Agius told the court that Mr Cauchi had a severe drinking problem and that in a previous case, the court had ordered him to stop drinking and take care of himself.

At the incident he was now being charged with, he told his wife and daughter that he was going to kill them and when the police arrested him, he threatened the officers inside the police station and told them that he would place a bomb inside and that he would run over them and their families.

The police inspector said he took the man to the health centre to be checked and there he started making fun of the doctor.

The doctor in charge sent Mr Cauchi to Mount Carmel where the medical department certified that he knew what he was doing.

Since Mr Cauchi was not represented by a lawyer, Magistrate Silvio Meli asked him if he was capable of looking after himself.

Mr Cauchi replied that he was but the magistrate told him that from what it looked like, he was not.
